Occupational Health and Safety Fundamentals
Course Description:

This intensive 40-hour training course is designed to equip participants with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to perform effectively as a workplace safety professional and instructor. With a clear and practical explanation of OSHA standards and safety responsibilities, this program provides a comprehensive introduction to occupational safety principles and effective training techniques.

Participants will gain hands-on experience in planning, preparing, delivering, and evaluating safety instruction, while also exploring broader aspects of safety leadership, compliance, and risk prevention. Upon successful completion, students will earn dual recognition as an Occupational Safety Specialist (OSS). The course also includes over $500 worth of resource materials to support continued learning and on-the-job application.

Purpose: Establish foundational safety knowledge for entry-level safety personnel.

Notes:

  • No prerequisites.
  • Provides essential understanding of workplace safety principles, hazard types, and OSHA basics.
Occupational Safety Technician (OST) - Applied Safety Skills

Purpose: Develop technical skills for implementing safety programs and performing field-level safety tasks.

Prerequisites: Completion of OSS

Required Courses:

  • Injury Illness Prevention Program (IIPP)
  • Construction Safety

Notes:

  • Covers hazard recognition, field safety awareness, and program implementation.
  • Risk Management competencies (self-inspections, JHA, incident investigation) are taught in Tier 3 (OSM), so these are not required here.
Occupational Safety Manager (OSM) - Safety Management Operations

Purpose: Prepare professionals to manage safety programs, lead teams, and oversee compliance.

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of OSS
  • Completion of OST

Required Courses:

  • Risk Management (includes self-inspections, audits, Job Hazard Analysis, and incident investigation)
  • Industrial Hygiene for Safety Professionals

Notes:

  • Students gain the ability to conduct audits, JHAs, and investigate workplace incidents.

Environmental Health and Safety Manager (EHS) - Professional Level EHS Oversight

Purpose: Provide advanced expertise in integrated occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental management.

Prerequisites:

  • Completion of OSS, OST, and OSM

Required Courses:

  • Hazardous Materials Management (utilizes 40-hour HAZWOPER classroom-driven course)

Notes / Guidance:

The 40-hour HAZWOPER course is classroom-driven with limited hands-on experience. To strengthen practical skills:

  • Include simulated exercises (table-top drills, PPE inspection, mock decontamination).
  • Optional field experiences or site visits recommended.

Covers environmental regulations, hazardous materials handling, and EHS management concepts.
